Three helicopters and three teams of the mountain rescue service, together with avalanche dogs, were involved in the rescue.
Two people died on Thursday in an avalanche that started in the federal state of Tyrol in the west of Austria. Both were covered by masses of snow under the top of the Rosskopf mountain outside the marked ski tracks, TASR reports based on reports from the APA and DPA agencies.
The avalanche occurred in the Tux Alps southeast of Innsbruck shortly before noon. The rescuers pulled out three buried people from under the snow. One managed to be revived, but help came too late for two local skiers, the operations center told APA.
Further details about the course of the accident and the identity of the victims were not yet available. Three helicopters and three teams of the mountain rescue service, together with avalanche dogs, were involved in the rescue.
On Thursday, the third of five levels of avalanche danger was declared in the area, which means a “significant” risk. It snowed in Tyrol shortly before Christmas. On Wednesday, an avalanche started in the mountains above Innsbruck, taking three athletes with it. One of them suffered minor injuries.
