The singer Beyoncé caught the attention of some American football fans with his performance at halftime of the NFL between Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens with the final gesture of his presentation. She ended the show with her hand signaling a weapon (“finger gun”), something prohibited by the league in player celebrations, but a gesture that has accompanied the singer in the promotion of her latest album, “Cowboy Carter”.
This season, the league tightened rules for athletes who make reference to firearms in celebrations such as a touchdown. Considered as unsportsmanlike conduct, these signs have been included in the prohibition of “violent gestures” and lead to a 15-yard penalty during the game and a fine for the athlete responsible.
In September this year, the wide receiver New York Jets forward Allen Lazard was fined $14,000 for such a celebration in a game against the Denver Broncos.
“The NFL is going to fine Beyoncé for making a gun with her fingers?!”, joked a user on X, formerly Twitter, after the end of the performance.
Beyoncé, however, has made the sign with her hands in several promotions of her album “Cowboy Carter”, in which songs such as the classic “Jolene” and “Texas Hold ‘Em” are influenced by the country musical style. In the presentation at the NFL Christmas game, the gesture was accompanied by a cowboy pose and a banner with the onomatopoeia “Bang!”.
Wednesday’s performance (25) was not the artist’s first at an American football game. Beyoncé was already responsible for livening up two Super Bowls, the American football league final, in 2013 and 2016.
