The fare in the city of São Paulo should be readjusted between R$5 and R$5.20 from January 2025, as reported on the morning of this Thursday, 26th. The values were presented during a meeting of the Municipal Traffic Council and Transport. The mayor of São Paulo, (MDB), after being re-elected, started to confirm that the value would be readjusted for 2025.

During the election year, however, Nunes chose to keep the tariff frozen. Now, it should give an increase that exceeds annual inflation, which should be 4.91%, according to INPCA Before this Monday’s meeting, Nunes had stated that the tariff would hardly exceed R$5. “I think the probability is very small, it’s very small”, said Nunes during the press conference after the diploma of those elected in this year’s elections.

The last fare adjustment took place from 2019 to 2020, when the fare rose from R$4.30 to R$4.40. From 2020 to 2024, the tariff did not increase. During this period, inflation increased by 33% and diesel oil, the fuel most consumed by the fleet, rose by 57%. During the meeting, data was presented showing that an increase of every R$0.10 in the tariff represents an increase of R$106 million in the system’s annual revenue. The municipality also claims that direct free payments (elderly people, PWDs, students and zero-rate Sundays) increased from 23% in 2019 to 28% in 2024.

The number of payers fell from 52% to 50%. Buses transport 7.13 million passengers on weekdays. The fleet of 13,500 vehicles makes 163,000 trips per day, covering 2.3 million kilometers of roads. There are 34 passenger terminals and 20,300 stopping points. After the pandemic, the fleet fell by 6%, but the supply of seats fell less – 3%. The ticket price is not fully covered by the fare value – the City Council supplements this value with a subsidy passed on by the municipality to bus companies. One of the challenges, however, has been the drop in the number of passengers using buses in the capital.
