A 37-year-old man was shot dead by the Military Police after taking his children hostage, in Altônia, in the northwest of Paraná, this Wednesday (25). The children, aged 3 and 6, went to spend Christmas with their father, but during the day, before lunch, the man took the children hostage and began a countdown to kill them with a knife. The man was separated from the children’s mother and the woman was not there.
According to the Military Police, it took almost seven hours of negotiations for the man to release the children. Teams from across the region were mobilized to the situation and the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE) of the Curitiba Military Police was called to the incident.
During negotiations, the 3-year-old girl was released by her father. Her 6-year-old brother remained at home, being threatened by his father with a knife. According to , the man began a countdown to kill his son and the police officers shot at him to prevent the child from being injured. The suspect was hit in the mouth and chest and did not resist. The suspect’s son was not injured.

“The team tried to discourage this citizen, tell him to drop the knife and surrender, but they were unable to do so, he maintained the desire to do greater harm to that child, so that the BOPE team had no other alternative than to carry out a few shots that led this citizen to cardiac arrest, initially, being rescued by teams from the Fire Department and local SAMU, and minutes later, it was detected that he was dying”, said Colonel Cláudio Longo, PM who responded to the incident.
The police officer also stated that the man had the knife at his son’s neck at all times, threatening to kill the boy.
The man’s body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML). The two children underwent medical care and were handed over to their mother. The woman must be interviewed by the Civil Police, who seek to clarify the motivation behind the man’s attempt to kill his children. The suspect had no prior records with the police.
