Previously, dogs were irreplaceable companions of our grandmothers and grandfathers. Not only as friends, but above all as helpers, without whom everyday life would look completely different. Today, we often forget about these furry heroes. Breeds that once dominated village buildings or accompanied hunters on game drives are slowly disappearing from consciousness. Perhaps now is the right time to rediscover forgotten dog breeds.
Do you remember your grandparents’ stories about their faithful four-legged companions? Dogs that used to run around Czech backyards or patiently accompany hunters on hunts, today often disappear not only from our homes, but also from our consciousness. Some breeds that once belonged to the common color of the countryside can hardly be found today. It is not that these dogs have lost their qualities, but they have been overshadowed by modern breeds that correspond to the current lifestyle.
“For vital seniors, the most suitable is a smaller, short-haired dog, calmly older, from a shelter, where they will certainly be happy to recommend you the best partner, who is reasonably active, not aggressive, is grateful for the all-day presence of his master at home, and in many cases is also neutered, ” advises veterinarian Zuzana Dominiková.

Dogs who were indispensable
Our ancestors valued dogs not only as companions, but above all as irreplaceable helpers. Hunting breeds, guard dogs or herding dogs had their place in everyday life. For example, the Czech Spotted Dog, formerly called the Burner’s Dog, was popular for its versatility and friendly nature. Today, however, he behaves quite exceptionally, which is a great pity.
Various hunting breeds, such as pointers or some scouts, are in a similar situation. Their specialization and great abilities were invaluable to hunters, but modern times do not wish them well. People living in cities do not have time for these breeds that need exercise.
Why are these breeds disappearing?
Interest in traditional dog breeds is declining for several reasons. People’s needs, their way of life and the conditions they have for dog breeding are changing. A large yard, a herd of sheep or long walks in nature are no longer commonplace. People prefer smaller breeds that fit better in an apartment.
Another reason is genetics and breeding trends. Breeds that were once common are giving way to fashionable dogs with more distinctive looks. However, with some of them, breeders are unable to maintain sufficient genetic diversity, leading to disease or temperament problems.
Legend of Czech courts
One of the typical examples of forgotten breeds is the already mentioned Czech spotted dog. In the past, it was popular due to its durability and unpretentiousness. He knew how to guard the yard, helped with grazing and was a faithful companion to the whole family. His thick coat and friendly nature made him the ideal country dog for the uncomfortable. Today, its breeding is a rarity and most people don’t even know it.
Other breeds on the brink of oblivion
Other forgotten breeds include the Czech Fousek or the medium-sized German Spitz. Fousek, popular for its hunting skills and unpretentiousness, was once an integral part of Czech hunting. Spitz, a guard dog with an indomitable temperament, used to be common in the countryside, where it guarded houses and stables.
There is hope for a return
The hope of rediscovering these dogs depends on public interest. If breeders start promoting the original Czech breeds more and people understand their contribution, the situation can change and the village yards will again be full of dogs that we remember from childhood.
