Learn how to freeze king cake and save Christmas leftovers

It’s not long before the Christmas season is over and, even though New Year’s Eve and Three Kings’ Day are synonymous with Christmas sweets on Portuguese tables, there are those who are already thinking of solutions to avoid wasting leftovers. In the case of king cake, if you have a few slices left, know that it is possible to freeze them, but there is a method you must follow so that the cake does not spoil in the freezer.

When it comes to a typical birthday cake or a king cake, if you have slices left over, freezing is the ideal solution to avoid wasting the leftovers and saving them for later use. According to Ekonomista, this type of cake is easy to freeze, as the fat helps to keep them.

In any case, never forget that you must wrap the cake in cling film and you cannot even skip this step, as the film is essential to protect the cake and ensure that it maintains its optimal conditions. You can also opt for aluminum foil, mainly because it is one of the best barriers against moisture, light and bacteria and protects the cake from condensation.

When stored according to all instructions, a king cake can last up to four months in the freezer. When defrosting it, the advice is not to use the microwave and let the cake defrost at room temperature. If you need to defrost the cake more quickly, when freezing you must prepare individual portions.

Also note that cakes with fruit toppings, except lemon ones, cannot be kept in the freezer. The same goes for cakes with egg cream.
