Measures align Brazilian standards with international road safety practices

It obliges the administration of federal, state and municipal highways to adopt quality and safety management systems in the implementation, operation and restoration of roads. Already approved in the Senate, the text is under analysis in the Chamber of Deputies.

The proposal, which modifies the National Traffic System (law 12,379 of 2011), also provides for the management of federal and state highways to create ombudsman channels for reporting problems and irregularities on the roads.

By 2050, the Union will be responsible for certifying the management and safety of all paved federal highways. The States and the Federal District must certify the good administration of roads by 2060.

The senator (Podemos-ES), author of the proposal, explains that the measures aim to align Brazilian standards with international road safety practices.

Next steps

The project will be analyzed in conclusive character in the Road and Transport Commission and in the CCJ (Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission). To become law, the proposal must be approved by the Chamber and the Senate.
