Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Thursday it had foiled plans by Ukrainian secret services to eliminate high-ranking Russian officials and their families. According to her statement, they planned to carry out the attacks in Moscow using bombs disguised as documents or external batteries, so-called powerbanks, TASR informs, according to a Reuters report.
“The Russian Federal Security Service prevented a series of assassination attempts against high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense,” the FSB said. “Four Russian citizens were detained who were involved in the preparation of the attacks,” she clarified, noting that the Russians were recruited by Ukraine.

According to the FSB statement, one of the men had the task of attaching a bomb disguised as an external battery to the car of one of the ministry’s top officials. According to her, another Russian planned to deliver a bomb to the officials, which was supposed to look like a folder with documents. The exact date of the assassinations was not immediately known, the FSB said.
On Tuesday, December 17, the commander of the radiation, chemical and biological defense units of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, and his assistant were killed in Moscow. Kirillov was the most senior military official to be assassinated in Russia since the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago, AFP reports. A source from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed to Reuters that the SBU was responsible for the attack.
