“We are investigating serious sabotage”: Finnish police take control of oil tanker suspected of belonging to the “Russian ghost fleet”
Ship Eagle S was boarded by authorities during the night
Finnish police and border guards approached an oil tanker operating under the Cook Island flag this Thursday, according to Reuters. The ship in question is suspected of being part of the “Russian ghost fleet”.
“We boarded the vessel at night and are investigating serious sabotage. We have reason to suspect that this Cook Islands-registered vessel damaged Estlink 2 and other cables,” Finnish police say. The cables in question are submarine electrical cables.
According to the Finnish border guard, cited by Reuters, it was observed that “the ship did not have its anchors raised” and the border agents ordered “the vessel registered in the Cook Islands to raise its anchors and was able to verify that they were not raised”.
“Control of the vessel was taken to bring it to Finnish regional waters. The vessel under investigation is the Eagle S.”
