China sentences to death man who ran over and killed 35 people in November

The collision happened on November 11th

A Chinese court on Friday sentenced to death the man who, in November, killed 35 people and injured 43 others in southern China by deliberately driving into a crowd, the official Xinhua news agency announced.

The 62-year-old man was, according to police at the time, angry about a divorce agreement and the division of financial assets.

The collision took place on November 11, on the eve of the country’s biggest exhibition of aeronautical equipment and left several bodies lying on the ground, according to video images that were published on social media, but quickly removed by authorities to avoid the disclosure of sensitive information.

The local police initially only mentioned the existence of injuries and ordered the removal of flowers and candles placed near the accident site.

Arrested shortly after the attack in Zhuhai, a city that borders Macau, the suspect was treated for possibly self-inflicted injuries after being found unconscious in his car with a knife.

The Chinese president called for “strict punishment” for the perpetrator in accordance with the law and asked all local governments to strengthen “risk prevention and control”.

The police set up barricades to prevent people from entering the sports center where the attack took place, which has since been closed until further notice.
