Wrong color, wrong size or simply an inappropriate gift for a given person. Unwanted gifts are not uncommon and we may often want to exchange or resell them so that they do not lie around the house unnecessarily. In such a situation, knowing whether you can return it to the store without a receipt will certainly come in handy.
By law, such a return may be accepted, but only if we present another proof of purchase. In practice, this can sometimes be problematic, especially for smaller stores. Many large stores have applications available in which, for example, we collect points and also record purchases. On this basis, we can make a return even without a receipt. Importantly, the Civil Code does not specify how the consumer should prove the fact of making a purchase. So a receipt is not required, but it is often the easiest way to prove that we bought a given item in a specific store.
So if we prove that we bought a given product in a store, we should be able to return it even without a receipt. In addition to applications that make it much easier, proof may also be an account statement if the purchase was paid for by card. Less popular options are to bring a witness who saw the purchase, or you can also ask to check the surveillance. However, the app and card statement options are the easiest.
In the case of a purchase from an online store, the return can be made easily, because Article 27 of the Consumer Rights Act states that if the consumer has concluded a distance contract, he or she may make return within 14 days of receiving the order without giving a reason.

Let’s remember that some products, including personalized items cannot be returned. We may also sometimes not provide you with proof of purchase. In such a situation, it is worth considering what to do with the gift so that it does not end up lying around the house. Importantly, if we receive unwanted gifts from only one person, it is worth gently suggesting to them that we would like to receive something consistent with our interests. Without upsetting her, of course.
If we receive an unsuccessful gift and we are unable to return it, selling it is a good option. People have different interests, what may be an unsuccessful gift for us may be a perfect gift for someone else. Therefore, if you receive, for example, a scarf in a color that is not attractive to you, it is worth reselling it, many people can be happy to have such a thing in their wardrobe.
What’s more, if we know someone who would like such a gift, e.g. we received cookie cutters and we don’t bake much, and our friend loves to invent new delicacies, we can give her a gift. However, we should not forcefully get rid of the gift and give it to someone who does not need it – in such a situation, it is better to decide to sell it.
