Three subsystems should exceed 70% of storage in January after recovering levels
Brazil will end 2024 with the reservoirs of the National Interconnected System (SIN) at 52% of capacity, according to a report released by the National Electric System Operator (ONS) on Thursday (Dec 26, 2024). Here is it (PDF – 1,956 kB).
The recovery of levels, after a period of severe drought in the North, Central-West and Southeast regions, is expected to continue in January. Projections indicate that all subsystems will exceed 60% of the Stored Energy (EAR), with 3 of them exceeding 70%. Recovery was observed especially throughout November and December, with above-average rainfall in the basins of the Jacuí, Uruguai, Iguaçu, Paranapanema rivers and in the incremental stretch of HPP Itaipu.
The North subsystem should reach the highest level, with 86.4%. Next come the South, with 73.8%, the Northeast, with 70.5%, and the Southeast/Central-West, with 64.8%.
“We will end 2024 with a very positive volume, especially after a period of severe drought. We will start next year with the reservoirs well positioned”said Marcio Rea, general director of the ONS.
Influent Natural Energy (ENA) must exceed the Long Term Average (MLT) in 3 subsystems: North (109%), Southeast/Central-West (103%) and Northeast (102%). The South is the exception, with a forecast of 79%.
Energy demand is expected to grow across the country. The National Interconnected System will register an increase of 4.2% (82,983 MWmed). The North will have the greatest expansion, of 10.5% (8,002 MWmed), followed by the South, with 4.9% (14,516 MWmed). Northeast and Southeast/Central-West will show growth of 3.3% (13,721 MWmed and 46,744 MWmed, respectively).
