With a good dose of suffering, Liverpool confirmed another victory in the English Championship this Thursday by defeating Leicester 3-1 at Anfield. The game was valid for the 18th round of the competition and, with the positive result, coach Arne Slot’s team was in an even more comfortable position in the classification. Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Salah built the result while Ayew discounted. This was the team’s 13th triumph in the tournament.
The red team reached 42 points and now has seven points ahead of Chelsea, in second place, who were surprised this Thursday by being beaten at home by Fulham. Leicester, who had aspirations of getting out of the relegation zone with a victory, remain in a complicated situation. The setback kept the team in 18th place with just 14 points.
The two teams return to the field this weekend, for the last round of the English Championship in 2024. The leader plays on Sunday and challenges West Ham at the Olympic Stadium in London. Leicester tries to rehabilitate on the same day by hosting Manchester City.
The match took on a dramatic tone after five minutes. Mavididi made a play on the left and crossed low. Jordan Ayew anticipated the marking, turned and shot into the right corner of goalkeeper Alisson: 1-0 for the visitors.
From then on, it was a one-team game, with Liverpool pressing and Leicester defending. The suffocation continued until the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, Gakpo fell on the left and shot a cross to beat goalkeeper Stolarcyk and tie the match.
Like the initial stage, the second half also started with the ball in the net. But this time, it was the local fans who screamed for a goal. Mac Allister received it on the right and crossed. Curtis Jones closed in the small area and turned the match around: 2-1 three minutes into the final stage.
Ahead on the scoreboard, the red team settled into the field and began to dictate the pace of the match. At 21, Liverpool scored again, again with Gakpo. However, the move was checked by VAR and the goal was not confirmed.
