The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) promised this Friday to reinforce its military presence in the Baltic Sea after cutting a submarine electrical cable, which connects Finland and Estonia, amid suspicions of sabotage by Russia.

“NATO will strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea”wrote this Friday on the social network X the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, Mark Rutte, indicating that he spoke with the Finnish President, Alex Stubb, “about the ongoing Finnish-led investigation into possible sabotage of submarine cables”.

“I expressed my total solidarity and support”, he said.

On Thursday, the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance condemned what he said was the “possible sabotage of submarine cables in the Baltic Sea”immediately demonstrating support for Tallinn and Helsinki.

Mark Rutte said he was ready to support Estonia and Finland, member countries of the organization, in determining responsibilities.

The Finnish police stated that they suspected that the oil tanker Eagle S, coming from Russia and suspected of being part of the call Russian “ghost fleet” (used by Moscow to transport oil, despite European sanctions), was involved in the breakdown of the submarine electrical cable between and Estonia occurred on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the European Union condemned “the deliberate destruction of infrastructure” of the countries of the community bloc, after this new cut of a submarine cable.

The oil tanker Eagle S has already been intercepted and is currently off the coast of Porkkala, about 30 kilometers from Helsinki, following the intervention of a Finnish patrol boat.

According to the West, the so-called The Russian “ghost fleet” is made up of ships that transport Russian oil and circumvent the sanctions imposed on Moscow following the war against Ukraine.

These tankers transporting Russian oil are an important source of financing for Russia to continue its war in Ukraine, which began with the invasion of the country in February 2022. Since then, several incidents have occurred in the Baltic Sea.

The Nord Stream pipelines, which once transported natural gas from Russia to Germany, were damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022.

Authorities considered this sabotage and opened a criminal investigation.
