(Reuters) – The forces of North Korea are suffering heavy losses on the battlefield of the war of Russia against a Ukrainewith a thousand soldiers killed or injured in the last week alone in the Russian region of KurskWhite House spokesman John Kirby said this Friday (27).

The numbers are much higher than those previously released by US authorities.

“It is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these soldiers as expendable and ordering them to carry out impractical attacks against Ukrainian defenses,” Kirby said, describing them as “massive, uncoordinated attacks.”

North Korea’s mission to the United Nations (UN) did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter. The Russian mission declined to speak.

Kirby stated that United States President Joe Biden is expected to approve another security package for Ukraine in the coming days. This week, the president condemned the Russian attacks on Christmas Day against the Ukrainian energy system and cities. He called on the Department of Defense to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.

On December 17, a US military official said North Korea had suffered hundreds of losses in battles in the Kursk region.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or injured, citing preliminary data. THE Reuters was unable to independently verify these numbers.
