Home to so many Champions League cups, the Real Madrid stadium changed its name in the final stretch of 2024. Previously named Santiago Bernabéu, in honor of the former Madrid player and president who was essential in the creation of the stadium, the place is now just “ Bernabéu”.
The option to exchange is mainly due to the strategies of the club’s marketing team, according to the newspaper Marca. The idea of shortening and simplifying the name came to facilitate possible future sponsorships, in addition to making the name more accessible.
In recent advertisements, the new nomenclature is already used, even though an official announcement about the change has not been made. In the comments on the Christmas post made on the Bernabéu account, some fans spoke out against the change, making comments such as “Don’t forget ‘Santiago'”, “Continue being Santiago Bernabéu, the name is history”, and “Don’t change the name “.
The change is not new for those who follow the merengue club. Bernabéu was already the name given to the stadium tour, and now it also appears on miniatures of the arena sold in the club’s stores, in addition to having even been tested on the stadium’s facade. In recent years, the modernization of the arena has been constant, and has been manifested mainly through the works carried out.
Between 2019 and 2023, the Bernabéu was undergoing renovation, changing its look and developing its facilities. Now, the venue can accommodate more fans, has a roof that opens and closes, and a retractable field.
Overall, the stadium cost the club almost 5 billion reais, and is already being used in matches. The team’s next match is not at home, but in Valencia, on January 3, replacing the La Liga match postponed due to the floods suffered by Spain. After Valencia, the next game at the Bernabéu will be on January 19, also for the Spanish Championship.
