SP subway and train fare will rise to R$5.20 in January

The 4% increase in ticket prices will be valid from the 6th; change is lower than inflation of 5.09%

The government of São Paulo informed this Thursday (Dec 26, 2024) that subway and train fares from the (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos) will increase from R$5 to R$5.20 from January 6th.

The adjustment in the value of tickets is equivalent to 4% and is below the year’s inflation of 5.09%, according to the projection calculation of the (Consumer Price Index of the Municipality of São Paulo).

This is the 2nd adjustment made by the (Republican) government to subway and train fares. In January 2024, tickets rose from R$4.40 to the current R$5. Previously, prices had been frozen since 2020.

According to the STM (Secretariat of Metropolitan Transport), the increase aims to increase the efficiency and safety of the public transport system.

BUSES WILL ALSO GET MORE EXPENSIVE

On the same day, the city of São Paulo announced an increase in bus fares. The value will jump from R$4.40 to R$5 from January 6, 2025, the same date as the CPTM adjustment.

Bus fares in the city have been frozen since January 2020. As a result, the correction was 13.6%, below the inflation of 32.77% accumulated during the period according to the (Broad Consumer Price Index).

This year, the municipal transport system spent R$11.4 billion and raised R$11.3 billion. More than half of this revenue (R$6.7 billion) were subsidies from the city hall, called “tariff compensation”.

The (Municipal Department of Transport and Urban Mobility) calculates that for every R$0.10 adjustment, tariff revenue would increase by R$106 million per year.

The mayor of the capital of São Paulo, (MDB), had already announced that he would readjust the value after the 2024 municipal elections.

Since the management of (PSD), adjustments to municipal bus fares have been carried out in conjunction with the state government, which controls (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos).

In 2024, on the other hand, while the State raised the fare to R$5, the city hall maintained the value at R$4.40.
