A Vietnamese court on Friday sentenced 27 people to death for drug trafficking. The local media reported on it, writes TASR. According to local newspapers, a thirty-five-member organized group smuggled 626 kilograms of heroin, ketamine and methamphetamine from Cambodia to Vietnam between March 2018 and November 2022. Eight members who escaped the death penalty were sentenced to 20 years to life imprisonment by the court after a four-day trial.
Communist Vietnam has some of the strictest drug laws in the world. At the same time, it keeps information about executions secret, and there is no official indication of when they are carried out.
According to the human rights organization Amnesty International Vietnamese courts routinely hand down the death penalty for drug convictions and the country is the world’s leading executioner. Since 2013, the death penalty has been carried out in Vietnam instead of being shot by firing squad by lethal injection.
