German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the dissolution of the Bundestag in Berlin on Friday and announced early elections for February 23 next year. TASR informs about it according to the DPA agency. He justified his decision by the need for political stability in Germany. According to him, this requires a government capable of acting and with a reliable majority in parliament.

In the middle of this month, Bundestag members expressed no confidence in the minority government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This was preceded by the collapse of the coalition of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens and liberals from the Free Democratic Party (FDP), when Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner from the FDP due to disagreements. The liberals subsequently left the three-coalition.

The coalition parties had already agreed on the announced date of early elections. The date of regular elections was originally supposed to be September 28 next year. An election campaign has already started in Germany, the main topics of which are the economy, support for Ukraine in the war against Russia and migration after the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. According to polls, the chancellor candidate of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz has more support in the upcoming elections than Scholz (SPD), who is the least popular German chancellor since reunification in 1990.
