The star of many holidays. Do this with a poinsettia and you will enjoy it next year too

Is this even possible, and if so, how to store the flower for the second year? In our conditions, the Star of Bethlehem blooms from late autumn to the end of winter. However, if properly cared for, it can please the eyes even until spring, and if properly stored, it will retain its color for the next spring. For this to happen, you need to pay attention to the right plant at the time of purchase. We choose specimens with fully colored flowers and intensely green leaves. Let’s also check whether there are no whiteflies, i.e. small white flies. Another important issue is transport. In the store, we wrap the flower in paper, and when we bring it home, we only unwrap half of it. We place it in a not too warm place for a few hours, and only then do we unpack it completely and move it to the destination. The Star of Bethlehem does not like sudden changes in temperature.

After the flowering period ends, usually in January or February, the poinsettia begins to lose its colorful leaves. This is a natural process that means the plant is entering a period of rest. During this time, watering should be limited, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Also stop fertilizing the plant. When the leaves fall, cut the plant’s shoots to a height of about 10-15 cm. Pruning will help the plant maintain a healthy shape and encourage the growth of new shoots. Use sharp, clean scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the plant. After trimming, move the poinsettia to a cool, dark place where the temperature is about 12-15 degrees C. This may be a basement, garage or other room that meets these conditions. During the rest period, the plant needs less light and water. During the rest period, water the plant sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. Excess water can lead to root rot, so it is important not to overwater. In March or April, as the days become longer and warmer, move the star of poinsettia back to a bright, warm room. Gradually increase the frequency of watering and start fertilizing the plant every 2-3 weeks, using a fertilizer for potted plants. If the poinsettia has outgrown its current pot, transplant it to a larger container with well-drained soil. Use a potting soil mix with some perlite or sand to ensure proper drainage. During the growing period, the star of poinsettia needs a lot of light, but avoid direct sunlight, which may cause burns on the leaves. Keep the soil evenly moist by watering the plant regularly but moderately. Continue fertilizing every 2-3 weeks. For the Star of Bethlehem to bloom again for Christmas, you need to provide it with the right light conditions. From late September to early December, the plant needs about 14 hours of darkness per day. You can achieve this by covering the plant with cardboard or placing it in a dark room overnight. During the day, provide it with bright but diffused light.
