A five-year-old child survived a traffic accident in Ibaiti, Norte Pioneiro do Paraná, after receiving a blood transfusion in the rescue helicopter.
Maria Laura Ferraz suffered the accident on December 12th and last Thursday (26th) she was discharged from the Hospital Universitário de Maringá.
The child’s mother, Luciana (36), was also in the vehicle involved in the accident in Ibaiti, but like her daughter, she has already been discharged from hospital.
After the accident, Maria Laura’s health condition was serious. The child suffered serious injuries to the intestine, liver and spleen and therefore medical care was provided by two helicopters from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU).
“This on-site blood transfusion equipment made all the difference for my daughter. If it weren’t for that, my family would have had a very sad Christmas, mourning the loss of our daughter. I can say without a doubt that my daughter was born again thanks to this equipment”, celebrates the girl’s father, supermarket manager Josilei Ferraz (40).

Maurício Lemos is the medical coordinator of the aeromedical operation in Maringá and was present at the scene of the accident in Ibaiti.
“Until then, I had not transfused any children at the scene of the accident, only adults. But there was no choice there. Either I did the blood transfusion, or the girl was going to die due to the serious condition she was in”, explained Lemos.
The doctor points out that since the system was implemented in Maringá, 42 blood transfusions have been carried out in the helicopter.
In addition to Maringá, the Paraná State Emergency Regulation System has bases in Curitiba, Cascavel, Londrina and Ponta Grossa.
The System also transports organs for transplants. Until November, Paraná’s aeromedical service had served 3,292 patients in 2024. In 2023, the state recorded a historic record, with 4,003 visits.
