The president today announced the dissolution of parliament and officially opened the way for the February 23
Steinmeier said today that political stability is a valuable asset of Germany, characterizing the dissolution of the Bundestag and the announcement of early elections as an exception to the rule.
“But especially in difficult times, like now, stability requires a government capable of taking action and a reliable majority in parliament,” the German president stressed.
Germany: When Scholz lost the vote of confidence
The government under Social Democrat Solz lost the confidence of parliament earlier in December, after Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s Free Democrats (FDP) left the governing coalition.
After the vote of confidence, Germany’s election campaign has effectively begun, with Christian Democrats (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, seen as the favorite to be the new chancellor, accusing the outgoing government of imposing too many regulatory rules and curbing growth.
The CDU/CSU conservatives maintain a comfortable lead of more than 10 points over the Social Democratic Party (SPD), according to opinion polls. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) also appears ahead of the SPD, while the Greens are in fourth place.
