Do you know which of the appliances “eats” the most energy and costs you the most crowns?
Energy prices are rising. And paying overpriced bills for electricity is no pleasure. Especially when you could save a few crowns. And so the question arises, which of the household appliances is the biggest consumer of electricity? What do you think? “Definitely a refrigerator and a freezer,” says Mrs. Jana from Příbrami. “I would say a dryer,” counters Mr. Miroslav from Prague. Third is Mrs. Jindra from Vlašimi, who is betting on a dishwasher…

What is the biggest energy guzzler?
No way, just water… Refrigerator consumption depends on the type of refrigerator and freezer. For example, such an economical class A++ model with an annual consumption of up to 200-300 kWh. The dishwasher is a bit more demanding, because if you wash the dishes every day, the annual consumption is up to 450 kWh. A tumble dryer is useful because it saves you hours at the ironing board, but it also takes a toll on your wallet. Its annual consumption is up to 750 kWh when drying clothes three times a week, which is also enough. But there is another thing that is much more energy intensive. And you know what it is?
Big bucks for hot water
Yes, it’s a boiler! According to two-year-old surveys, a two-member family spends up to 16,000 crowns per year on the operation of the boiler. Nowadays it can be much more. Therefore, if you want to “not come to the drum”, you should optimize the size and capacity of your water heater. As? “First, choose the right boiler size. This is derived from how many of you there are in the household, but also depending on whether you have a shower or a bathtub in the bathroom,” explains the expert, adding that the water consumption when showering per person is 30-50 liters of water at a temperature of 40° C. If you take a bath, one such “bathing” will cost up to 100 liters of warm water.
Bath or shower?
“This means that a boiler for a family of four with a shower should have at least 80-120 l. If there are also four of you and you have a bathtub instead of a “shower” (even if you load it in the bathtub daily), you need a boiler with a volume of 120-150 liters,” advises the expert, adding in one breath that the temperature you set the machine to is also important. This little thing has a big impact on electricity consumption and thus also on your wallet.
Boiler and its operation
“Set the water heating on the boiler to 55-65 °C. You don’t need a higher water temperature and it will burden your budget unnecessarily,” advises the expert, adding that the distance of the boiler from the “take-off point”, i.e. the bathroom, is also important. The longer it is, the longer it will take for hot water to flow through your faucet. And every wait for a warm trickle from the “tap” gets more expensive. Therefore, if you can, place the boiler directly in the bathroom.
Beware of the cold!
According to the expert, other “little things” are important, such as good insulation of pipes and batteries. And the temperature of the place where the boiler is in operation. If the room is too cold, it can create unnecessary deposits of limescale on the device, and in addition, the boiler has to spend more energy to heat the water, which again increases the cost.
New habits, few expenses
But let’s not blame everything on the boiler. Your behavior towards hot water is also important for saving crowns. If you save money with it, you have a chance to pay a smaller electricity bill than last year, for example. According to experts, you just need to adjust a few things. For example, instead of classic tap faucets, choose lever faucets in the bathroom and kitchen, which are far more economical. And another challenge – choose a shower instead of frequent soaking in the bathtub! It is not only cheaper, but also healthier!
