New Year’s Eve will have minimum temperatures varying between minus three degrees Celsius, in the North and Center interior, and 10°C in the Algarve.
According to the statement released this Friday by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), for the end of the year, between December 31st and January 1st, the weather “will be conditioned by a anticyclone located on the Iberian Peninsula, and for a depression region at medium and high levels, centered on the Gulf of Cádiz”.
Lightly cloudy or clear skies are expected for the 31st, generally very cloudy in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, with the formation of mist or morning fog in these regions, while the wind will blow weak to moderate from the eastern quadrant.
IPMA also highlighted that the maximum temperature will vary between 5°C and 12°C in the North and Center interior and up to 19°C in the rest of the territory, while the temperature minimum temperature will vary between -3°C and 0°C in the North and Center interiorbeing between 0°C and 7°C in the rest of the territory, with the exception of the Algarve where the minimum temperature can reach 10°C.
“On New Year’s Eve, the sky should be generally clear, with the exception of northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Altawhere it should be very cloudywith the formation of mist or fog in some places. No precipitation is expected and the wind will be generally weak from the eastern quadrant”, it can be read.
For January 1st, the IPMA predicts the situation will be “very similar to that of the 31st, although from the afternoon onwards there may be an increase in cloudiness, especially due to high clouds”.
The institute also added that “favorable conditions for the formation of frost in the interior North and Center“.
Regarding maritime agitation, on the west coast the waves will be from the northwest with a significant height of 1 to 1.5 meters and on the south coast the waves will be from the southeast with a significant height of 1 to 1.5 meters, gradually decreasing to 1 meter in the January 1st.
Azores
As for the Azores Archipelago, IPMA pointed out that “a depressioncentered to the west of the archipelago and with an associated frontal system, should cause a gradual worsening of the weather on all islands“.
“On the 31st, precipitation is expected from dawn in the Western Group, then extending to the rest of the archipelago, reaching the Eastern Group from the evening onwards. On January 1st, precipitation will continue on all islands”, detailed the institute.
Minimum temperatures ranging between 15°C and 17°C and maximum temperatures between 18°C and 20°C are expected.
The swell will be from the south with a significant height of 3 to 5 meters, on December 31st, gradually passing to the eastern quadrant on January 1st.
