Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to the Azerbaijani authorities for the “tragic incident” that led to the Embraer plane crash (). The president lamented the crash of the Embraer 190, from Azerbaijan Airlines, this Wednesday (25), in Kazakhstan. The information comes from the Russian news agency Interfax.
Putin reportedly apologized to the Azerbaijani president because the incident took place in Russian airspace but, according to the Kremlin, the location was being attacked by Ukrainian drones.
For this reason, the air defense systems would have repelled the attacks and may have led to the crash of the plane, carrying 67 people, according to the official statement.
“Vladimir Putin apologized for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his strong and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
“At that time, Grozny, Mozdok and Vladikavkaz were being attacked by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, and Russian air defense systems repelled these attacks,” said the Kremlin, which also said the call was a request from Putin.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pointed out that the plane was “subject to external physical and technical interference in Russian airspace, resulting in a complete lack of control and its redirection to the Kazakh city of Aktau,” the Azerbaijani presidential office said.
