The measure will function as a cashback system, allowing foreign visitors to recover taxes paid on purchases made in the state
The State government announced a new initiative aimed at international tourists: the “Tax Free” program. This measure will function as a cashback system, allowing foreign visitors to recover taxes paid on purchases made in the state. The refund will only apply to purchases made in accredited stores, using credit cards issued outside Brazil. The State Finance Secretary, Leonardo Lobo, highlighted in a note that the implementation of “Tax Free” is a common strategy in tourist destinations, with the aim of encouraging consumption among visitors.
In turn, the Secretary of Tourism, Gustavo Tutuca, emphasized that this action positions Rio de Janeiro at a new level of attractiveness for international tourism. The law establishing the program was sanctioned by the governor of PL. In addition to “Tax Free”, the government also sanctioned other legislation related to tax issues. Among them, tax exemption for companies located in Export Processing Zones (ZPE) stands out.
These areas are designated as free trade zones, where companies can establish themselves to produce goods intended for export. Governor Claudio Castro stated in a statement that the new laws aim to guarantee the legal security necessary for the granting of tax benefits.
