The attack took place outside the swimming area in the Marsa Alam resort.
One tourist was killed and another injured in a shark attack in the Red Sea near the Egyptian coastal resort of Marsa Alam. This was announced on Sunday by the Egyptian Ministry of the Environment, TASR reports, according to the Reuters agency.
The ministry did not disclose the nationality of the tourists. According to him, the attack took place near the docks in the north of the resort in deep water outside the zone reserved for swimming. The area was closed to swimmers for two days.
Sharks live in the Red Sea, but human encounters with them are relatively rare, writes Reuters. The last such incident occurred in June 2023, when a tiger shark killed a Russian tourist in the resort of Hurghada, further north. Marsá Alam is a smaller coastal town known for its coral reefs, marine life and beaches.
