Former president claims that proposal that limits voting to a single candidate aims to avoid “defeat” of the left in the 2026 elections
The former president (PL) criticized, this Saturday (Dec 28, 2024), the proposal by members of the government (PT) that changes the rules for the elections to renew 2/3 of the Senate in 2026, when 54 of the 81 seats will be up for grabs.
The PL (Bill), presented by the senator (PT-AP), proposes that voters choose only 1 candidate for the Senate per unit of the Federation, instead of 2, as stipulated in the Constitution. Leia a (PDF – 95 KB).
According to the proposal, in 2026, the 2 candidates with the most votes in each state would be elected. The change could benefit government candidates, as the “doubles” — coalitions with 2 right-wing candidates —, increasing the chances of victory for the allied base.
“In almost all states, the tendency of the PL, the most right-wing party, is to launch a single candidate for the Senate, seeking composition with other acronyms, if they wish”wrote Bolsonaro on X (formerly Twitter).
“With this, these parties could elect more than 40 senators out of a total of 54 vacancies. A ‘center-right’ majority would guarantee the balance between the Powers and the return of democracy in 2027”he declared.
On December 9, Randolfe removed the project from the agenda, but has already announced his intention to resume the debate in 2025, along with a reform of the Electoral Code.
Randolfe, whose term ends in 2 years, would face difficulties in being re-elected in his state. If the proposal is approved, he would have a better chance of winning, as he could concentrate all the votes from the left behind his candidacy.
