President of the BC receives an offer from Ricardo Nunes to be Secretary of Finance and declares that he is not seeking a role in government
The mayor of São Paulo, (MDB), asked the president of the BC (Central Bank), Roberto Campos Neto, if he would like to be Secretary of Finance for the municipal government. It is unclear when the conversation took place.
Campos Neto said he had another plan. “I will work in the private sector”, he told the Poder360 this Saturday (28. Dec. 2024). He did not make any statements about what he discussed with Nunes or the date on which this happened. His mandate runs until Tuesday (Dec 31). The new president of the monetary authority Gabriel Galípolo.
The current president of the BC will have to wait until July 2025 to work in banks. The president and directors of the monetary authority must undergo a 6-month quarantine when leaving the institution. They continue to receive remuneration during the period. There is no restriction on holding public office.
APPROACH AT LUNCH IN 2023
Nunes and Campos Neto spoke at length in 2023 during a lunch in São Paulo, where they sat next to each other. Nunes mayor in October 2024. Before the start of the electoral campaign, I had spoken to Campos Neto again and asked if he would accept being Secretary of Finance.
One of Nunes’ secretaries told the Poder360 that Campos Neto declined the proposal to start a position in the city hall in 2025, but was willing to evaluate a new invitation to the role later.
Nunes announced this Saturday (Dec 28) several names that will occupy positions in his government from 2025 onwards. The Secretary of Finance, Luis Felipe Arellano, a public servant at the city hall, will be kept in the position.
