Scorer of one of Racing’s title goals in the Copa Sudamericana final, striker Adrián “Maravilla” Martínez made a surprising statement on Saturday night (28). In an interview with the TV program At the Message, by presenter Mirtha Legrand, the number 9 of the Avellaneda club revealed that he is a fan of River Plate, one of Racing’s biggest rivals.
According to Adrián Martínez, the love for River Plate was passed on by members of his family. However, the center forward denied being a fanatical fan of the four-time Copa Libertadores champion.
“My whole family are River fans, and so am I. But I’m not a fanatic”, he began.
Following the interview, Martínez preached respect for Racing and said that he would not play, for example, with the shirt of Independiente, Racing’s biggest rival and the biggest Libertadores champion, with seven wins.
“I wouldn’t play for Independiente. I am very grateful to the people who gave me food and to my family. This is something I have respected throughout my career. I can’t play for the rival of the club that fed me. I played at Instituto and received offers to play for Talleres, but I said no”, he added.
Martínez became an idol in 2024
Despite arriving at Racing in 2024, especially after winning the Copa Sudamericana, in Asunción, Paraguay. With ten goals, the center forward was the top scorer in the international competition and was largely responsible for taking Racing out of the line for continental titles after 36 years.
Since arriving at Avellaneda to play for Racing, “Maravilla” has scored 30 goals and contributed eight assists in 49 matches. The excellent numbers put the number 9 even more in the spotlight in South American football, which leaves his future open in 2025.
