Action was carried out between Thursday and Friday; 6 hotels were visited and 3 fined, in addition to 3 kiosks
O and the Consumer Protection Secretariat of the State of Rio de Janeiro inspected 6 hotels on the Copacabana beachfront between Thursday and Friday (Dec 26 and 27, 2024). Of them, 3 were fined for lack of informative posters for guests and for displaying products that had expired in the kitchens.
According to the Secretary of State for Consumer Protection, Gutemberg Fonseca, the objective of the action is to ensure that everyone can “celebrate and enjoy” New Year’s party safely and take “only good memories of New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro”.
“We know the importance of major events for our State. Celebrating the New Year in Copacabana puts our State in a true showcase, as it is when we receive visitors from all over the world, boosting our economy”he said.
Expired products
In a hotel on Avenida Atlântica, inspectors found expired food in the kitchen (pastry, duck and octopus cuts), as well as carpaccio of salmon (raw meat cut into thin slices, on top of which lemon juice and olive oil are added), without specifying the expiration date and poorly stored.
There were also no mandatory items for guests, such as the “Dial 180” posters, to combat violence against women, “Say no to sexual tourism” and the explanatory leaflet on AIDS prevention.
Another hotel inspected on the Copacabana waterfront also did not have an explanatory leaflet on how to prevent HIV, and only provided condoms to customers. The 3rd inspected, also on Avenida Atlântica, did not have AIDS prevention leaflets, nor the Procon-RJ complaints book.
In addition, 3 kiosks on the waterfront that organize packages for New Year’s Eve received notices of irregularities for not having the mandatory signs “Disque 151”, which provides the telephone number and address of Procon-RJ, and “Disque 180”. In one of the kiosks there was also no sign indicating the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors.
According to the president of Procon-RJ, Marcelo Barboza, joint actions are important to ensure that consumer rights are respected and prevent problems in consumer relations, as well as strengthening the State Consumer Protection System, which is managed by the Secretariat of Consumer Protection.
“Procon-RJ goes hand in hand with Sedcon also during this festive moment, which is New Year’s Eve, so that the consumer is well served in fair consumption environments. Therefore, it is important that establishments follow what the Consumer Protection Code recommends and provide clear and transparent information”said Barboza.
