Interim president of South Korea orders full mobilization after accident

South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, ordered rescuers to mobilize “all available equipment and personnel” to respond to the plane crash at Muan International Airport in the south of the country, according to the Interior Ministry. and Security.

An aircraft carrying 181 people – 175 passengers and six crew – left the runway and collided with an airport wall this Sunday (29), local time (Saturday night, 28, Brasília time). At least 62 people died, and two were rescued.

Investigators from South Korea’s Incident Investigation Committee arrived at the airport at 10 a.m. local time (10 p.m. Saturday in Brasília), about an hour after the accident, and are investigating the cause of the collision, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Crisis

Choi has been acting president since Friday (27).

He took office after President Yoon Suk-yeol and later his replacement Han Duck-soo were impeached by the country’s parliament amid a political crisis.

Yoon was removed two weeks ago after an unsuccessful martial law order. And Han, his replacement, had an impeachment process filed by the opposition approved against him this Friday.

Choi was, until he held the interim presidency, South Korea’s finance minister.
