New governing bodies of the Sardine Gastronomic Confraternity of Portimão elected

The Confraria Gastronomica da Sardinha de Portimão announced the election of its new governing bodies for the period 2024-2027. The vote, held unanimously during the Extraordinary Assembly on December 27, 2024, re-elected Júlio Ferreira as president of the Council and Álvaro Bila as president of the Board of the General Assembly. The news was the election of Carlos Alberto Romão dos Reis to head the Fiscal Council, among other changes in members.

The Brotherhood reaffirmed its commitment to valuing sardines as a gastronomic and cultural symbol. Among the main objectives are the survey, defense and promotion of the cultural, environmental and historical heritage associated with sardines.

For the first quarter of 2025, the launch of the book “Portimão, Terra da Sardinha” is planned, a significant milestone in the fraternity’s promotional activities. Other initiatives will be announced throughout the term.

Social bodies and maritime tradition

Management positions follow maritime tradition, reflecting the essential roles in sardine fishing. Among those elected:

  • Júlio Ferreira (Fishing Master): president of the Board.
  • Luís Filipe Cabrita de Brito (1st Boatswain Fisherman): vice-president.
  • Cátia Andreia Baltar Poeira Algarve (Mestre Terra): treasurer.
  • João Carlos Miguel Monteiro (Seller/Auctioneer at Lota): member responsible for events.

Other positions include functions such as Homem da Chata, Marinheiro do Acostado and Arrais de Acostado, reinforcing the brotherhood’s historical connection with traditional fishing practices.

Since its creation, it has stood out as a reference in the gastronomic scene of the region and the country. The new management is committed to continuing the work carried out, introducing new strategies and actions that strengthen the cultural and economic impact of sardines.
