In an interview with CNN Portugal, Venâncio Mondlane, who was the second most voted candidate in the presidential elections in Mozambique, announces a new phase in the ongoing protests in the country, which will last until the inauguration, which should take place in mid-January.
The candidate accuses the government of committing genocide, indiscriminately killing opposing citizens. However, he denies the possibility of arming civilians. “There are several forces in Mozambique, including within the official armed forces and other military-trained forces, that are currently willing to defend the population when they are exercising their right to demonstrate”, explains Mondlane, adding: “What I said is that we are feeling forced to accept help from these forces who feel the need to defend the population in this genocide.”
