The United States will provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth nearly $2.5 billion. TASR informs about it based on the announcement of US President Joe Biden published on the website of the White House.
According to Biden’s statement, this one the package includes both immediate and long-term deliveries, primarily of air defense systems and artillery shells.
As part of the new package, Washington will provide Kyiv $1.25 billion worth of aid from Defense Department stocks (Pentagon), as well as $1.22 billion in assistance through the USAI program (Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative) belonging to the Pentagon, through which the US government orders military equipment for Ukraine from arms companies.
Biden reminded that he was going for the last available funds under this programu allocated by Congress through an amendment he signed in April.
“I have directed my administration to what continued to provide as much aid as possible to Ukraine as quickly as possible,” states Biden. According to him, this includes the decommissioning of older American equipment, its quick delivery to Ukraine, and, thanks to further production, support for the US arms industry.
The head of the White House added that the US will be at his behest for the rest of his time in office “work tirelessly to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced the planned aid package on Sunday. “I know that America is preparing an important decision to support Ukraine. We look forward to tomorrow’s official announcement: significant aid packages for our soldiers,” he wrote on Telegram.
