Companies have record defaults and debts of R$156 billion

There were 7 million businesses in the red in October, a number that represents 32.3% of existing ventures in Brazil

October 2024 registered a new record of defaults among Brazilian companies, with 7 million defaulters, which represents 32.3% of the total number of companies in the country. The accumulated value of debts reached R$ 156.1 billionalso the largest in the historical series of the Serasa Experian Company Default Indicator. On average, each CNPJ had around 7.4 negative accounts in the period.

The sector of services represented the majority of companies with negative commitments (56.2%). Next was business (35.4%), followed by industries (7.3%). The sectors primary e others (which includes the financial and third sector segments) were 0.8% and 0.3%, respectively.

In relation to debts, the services sector also led, accounting for 31% of total outstanding debts. Banks and Cards came in 2nd place, with 21.1% of debts.

At the state level, Maranhão had the highest rate of business default, with 43% of companies in the State having a negative CNPJ. Alagoas (42.3%) and Amapá (40.8%) were also among the states with the highest proportion of defaulting companies.

Micro and small businesses

Of the 7 million negative companies, 6.5 million are micro and small companies, which together accumulate 46.5 million debts, totaling R$134.1 billion. On average, each of these delinquent companies had 7.1 outstanding accounts.
