The president published a post on social media this Sunday (12/29) in which he lamented the death of former US president Jimmy Carter. The head of the Executive recalled the legacy of the former president, whom he called a “lover of democracy and defender of peace”.

Lula highlighted Carter’s work, in the late 1970s, in pressuring the dictatorship in Brazil for the release of political prisoners. “Afterwards, as a former president, he continued to campaign for the promotion of human rights, peace and the eradication of diseases in Africa and Latin America”, he added.
“Carter achieved the feat of having a job as a former president, over decades, that was as important or more important than his term in the White House,” he said.
The PT member also stated that Carter will be remembered “forever as a name who defended that peace is the most important condition for development”.
Jimmy Carter died this Sunday (29/12), aged 100. The information was confirmed by the son to the American newspaper The Washington Post.
Carter governed the country between 1977 and 1981, in a turbulent period of economic and energy crisis, as well as diplomatic conflicts. However, it consolidated its name in history through its commitment to peace, human rights and humanitarian actions around the world.

Another head of power who mourned the death of the former president was minister Luís Roberto Barroso, president of the Federal Supreme Court (). He stated that Carter was a person who honored public life, with integrity and commitments to democracy and human rights.
“The Foundation that bears his name was an observer of the Brazilian elections, with an important participation. His memory deserves to be revered as someone who made a valuable contribution to the cause of humanity,” he said.
