Although it is never an easy decision, and tussles over property and children often ensue, in North Korea one pays an extremely high tax to end a marriage. Dictator Kim Jong-un ordered divorcing couples to be sent to a labor camp to atone for their crimes. The North Korean despot wants them both to serve up to six months, because rexorcism is considered anti-socialist.

Until recently, only the husband who filed for divorce was punished, even if he was physically abused. It was revealed by a resident of an extremely isolated country who fled to the West. “I was at the Kim Jong-suk District People’s Court where 12 people received divorce decrees. Immediately after the sentencing, they were transferred to the district labor training camp,” claims a resident of Rjanggang province according to The Sun.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, all supplies to the country were cut off, and it was very difficult for most North Korean families to support themselves. Bad economic conditions led to the breakdown of many marriages. In order to keep married couples from separating during this turbulent period, the government began to punish divorcing couples.

“Until last year, when a couple got divorced, only the one who filed for divorce first was sent to a labor camp. “From this month, all divorced couples will be sent to labor training camps,” the North Korean added.
