In September 2023 he made one of his last public appearances. There Jimmy Carter sat with his wife Rosalynn – she died shortly afterwards, in November 2023 – in the back seat of a burgundy vintage convertible and was being driven through his hometown of Plains to the annual Peanut Parade. Marching behind the car were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The then 98-year-old wore a blue T-shirt and a baseball cap. There was a mild smile on his face. Passersby waved and applauded.
