‘My father was a hero’, says son of Jimmy Carter, who died today at age 100

Carter Center said he died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia.

“My father was a hero, not just to me, but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and selfless love,” Chip Carter, Jimmy Carter’s son, said in a statement released by after the confirmation of the death of the former US president, at the age of 100.

“My brothers, sister and I share it with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live out these shared beliefs,” he continued.

“Carter, the longest-serving American president who won the Nobel Peace Prize and spent his years after leaving office pursuing peace and charitable works, has died,” the Carter Center said. He was 100 years old.

The Carter Center said that died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia. The former president had entered palliative care in February 2023.

There will be public ceremonies in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Plains, Georgia. Final arrangements for President Carter’s state funeral, including all public events and motorcade routes, are still pending, the Center said.
