From January to September, more people died than were born.
The number of inhabitants of the Czech Republic decreased by 3,318 in the first nine months of this year. According to the data of the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) published on Monday, the natural population decline was a record. As of September 30, there were 10,897,237 people living in the Czech Republic, TASR informs based on a report from the Novinky.cz portal.
From January to September 2024, according to the CZSO, more people died than were born every month. The Czech Republic was thus naturally losing its population. In total, there was a record decrease of approximately 18,300 inhabitants in three quarters of the year, stated Michaela Němečková from the Department of Demographic Statistics of the CZSO.
8 percent fewer children were born than in the year-on-year comparison
From January to September, 64,236 children were born, which is eight percent less compared to the previous year. 82,550 people died.
The largest decrease in the number of inhabitants by natural means was recorded so far in the pandemic year 2021, when it represented 17,900 people.
In the first nine months of this year, 98,520 people immigrated to the Czech Republic, and 83,524 people emigrated. At the end of March, the validity of many Ukrainian refugees’ temporary residence permits expired and they did not apply for an extension. Last year, for the same period, there was a positive migration balance of over 74,000 people.
Citizens of the Czech Republic concluded 38,097 marriages, which is ten percent less than in the same period last year. There were 15,185 divorces, a year-on-year increase of five percent. 46.8 percent of children were born out of wedlock.
