Repeated exposure to road salt on the dog’s paws can lead to irritation and cracking of the skin and pads. Into cracked skin easily an infection takes hold. Dogs lick their paws intensively, they hurt and do not reach their paws. By licking the paws, salt also enters the digestive system and can cause digestive problems. This was stated by the Chamber of Veterinary Physicians (KVL) of the Slovak Republic for TASR.
In winter, according to KVL, it is therefore necessary avoid places that are freshly sprinkled. It is necessary after every walk wash the paws thoroughly with lukewarm water. It is also good use protective creamwhich protects the skin on the paws and regenerates it at the same time. Can be used for example vaseline, wax or shea butter, zoomed in on the vets. They recommend getting dog boots that also protect against frostbite.
“Just as we humans protect and take care of our hands and feet, let’s try to protect the dog’s as well. Let’s give preference in winter shorter walks before longer onesso that they, not only us, can enjoy a winter snowy walk,” the chamber stated.
