Towels that are soft to the touch are much more comfortable on the skin, so we try to keep them fluffy for longer. However, with frequent washing, even towels made of high-quality fabric can become rough and unpleasant to the touch. How can this be prevented? I tried various home remedies for soft towels, but this one especially surprised me: one lozenge is enough to make your towels fluffy like a teddy bear, fresh-smelling and snow-white for a long time.

Why are towels rough and smelly after washing?

The state in which we remove the towels from the washing machine after the end of the washing cycle is influenced by many factors. They are not always fragrant and soft, sometimes they change their structure and become hard, rough and really unpleasant to the touch. No one wants new towels to look old, worn out and need to be replaced after just a few washesso it pays to learn how to wash skillfully and pay attention not only to the cleanliness of the towels, but also to the condition of the fabric fibers.

Low-quality fabrics deteriorate more easily, but even those expensive, branded products made of heavy-weight fabrics should be properly cared for. Why are towels rough and smelly after washing? Washing with the wrong powder, incorrect program selection, regularly adding chemical rinse or overloading the drum are the main reasons why towels lose their properties.

If you put too many things in the washing machine at once, it will not be possible to thoroughly rinse the powder or fabric softener from them, and the detergent residues will stick the fibers together and make them stiff. On the other hand, unpleasant odors on towels may persist even after washing if:

  • damp textiles end up in the laundry basket and spend so many hours before being washed;
  • the wrong program was selected and the washing temperature was too low;
  • towels were left in the drum too long waiting to be removed and hung;
  • the drum of the washing machine has not been cleaned for a long time and is covered with dirt and detergent residues and a musty smell.

An excellent detergent that keeps the fibers of bathroom towels soft and keeps the pleasant smell of clean laundry longer is…. aspirin. This little effervescent tablet of the popular remedy has been shown to act as a fabric softener, detergent and bleach during washing.

If you mainly use white towels and don’t want them to turn gray from week to week, add 1 aspirin tablet to the standard wash cycle. Aspirin will not only replace ready-made detergents, but will also be an alternative to other home methods, including rinsing with vinegar, added baking soda or table salt.
