Married couple Michal Kovačič and Zuzana Kovačič Hanzelová also live in Bratislava with their daughter Mila and their faithful four-legged pet. Hektor was adopted in 2018 as a puppy from the shelter. They take exemplary care of their furry companion and, like almost all dog owners, the end of the year causes wrinkles on their foreheads.

Despite the law, which allows the use of fireworks only on December 31 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight and then on January 1 from midnight to 2:00 a.m., there are people who refuse to do so. Loud noises cause stress to animals. Hektor is also afraid of them, which is why the journalist sent a harsh message on his behalf. “Some good guy was banging firecrackers in the Old Town today from eight in the evening. Hektor greets and says that there is definitely a place for you somewhere in dog hell,” wrote Kovačič Hanzelová on the social network.

The use of pyrotechnics is prohibited

The capital city also gave up fireworks this year, mainly for ecological and financial reasons. The use of pyrotechnics is regulated by the Explosives and Pyrotechnics Act. Specific restrictions are established by municipalities and cities through generally binding regulations. In Bratislava, the ban on the use of pyrotechnics applies to products of categories F2 and F3, i.e. commonly available pyrotechnics, such as firecrackers, rockets or fireworks. Violation of this prohibition may be dealt with by a fine.

Fireworks can be used in places that are at least 250 meters from hospitals, treatment centers, hospices, nursing homes, social service facilities, quarantine stations, shelters and rescue centers for animals, veterinary clinics with an animal hospitalization section or zoos or facilities to save protected animals.
