After a legal battle that lasted more than eight years, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finalized their divorce. According to the actress’ lawyers, the two parties signed the agreement on Monday (30). She filed for divorce in 2016.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all the property they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since then she has focused on finding peace and healing for her family. This is just part of a long ongoing process that began eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but relieved that this part is over,” James Simon, Jolie’s lawyer, told CNN on Monday.
A CNN reached out to Brad Pitt’s representatives, but received no answers.
Once one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, Jolie and Pitt were together for about a decade and became parents to six children before tying the knot in 2014.
The length of the divorce proceedings can be attributed to several factors, including a contentious child custody dispute, fallout from a 2016 argument on a private plane and a compound, the French winery they jointly owned and where they got married.
Details about the circumstances of the 2016 plane incident came to light in August 2022, when a heavily censored FBI report provided to the CNN per a source at the time, revealed that he and verbally abused his children while they were on board the private jet, traveling from France to the US.
Pitt was never arrested or charged with crimes, according to an FBI statement at the time.
Jolie filed for divorce days after the flight, citing irreconcilable differences. She asked the court to grant sole physical custody of the couple’s then-minor children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne, who were between 8 and 15 years old at the time — with visitation rights for Pitt, who would maintain joint legal custody.
In an interview with Vogue India the following year, Jolie said that .
“It was the right decision. I remain focused on their healing,” she said. “They are six very brave and very strong young people.”
The French winery they jointly owned has since become the center of a contentious and ongoing legal dispute, stemming from the 2021 sale of Jolie’s stake, which Pitt has since claimed was illegal. The case remains ongoing.
