Workers don’t earn enough to buy tickets; party in Carneiros (PE) costs more than double the average income in the State
Big New Year’s Eve parties are popular in the Northeast. Coastal cities in Bahia, Alagoas and Ceará receive tourists every year. Despite this, the average worker in the region does not earn enough to participate in these celebrations.
One of the most discrepant examples is the held in Pernambuco. Ticket prices for December 31st vary from R$5,000 for men and R$4,000 for women – an average of R$4,500. It is more than double the general income of an employed person in the state (R$2,228).
Even some “cheaper” luxury parties still have a high cost for workers. The entrance to the in Porto Seguro (BA), costs R$1,550. The Bahian employee earns, on average, R$2,020. That leaves R$470 – insufficient amount to maintain a minimally acceptable standard of living over the course of 1 month.
Read the discrepancies in the infographic below:
Prices do not include incidental expenses for accommodation, food, drinks, etc. In the end, the cost must be even higher.
O Poder360 consulted ticket prices on December 26, 2024 on the official sales websites. It is possible that they have changed by the date of publication of this report. When there was a difference between the cost for men and women, this digital newspaper calculated the average of the entries.
Information on income is from the (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), considering all employed workers aged 14 or over in the 3rd quarter of the year.
Gringos on New Year’s Eve
A survey by the (Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion) shows that the Northeastern States should receive more foreign tourists for the 2024/2025 turnaround. The most significant increases were in:
- Bahia – 64%;
- Ceará – 58%;
- Pernambuco – 54%;
- Rio Grande do Norte – 36%.
The tendency to attract people from outside to parties is noticeable in the marketing strategy of big parties. The event in Carneiros publishes images with English subtitles in the 1st paragraph. The translation into Portuguese comes later.
The survey considers information on international landings from December 26th to January 1st. Here are the numbers (PDF – 3 MB).
One of the reasons that may have influenced the movement was the devaluation of the real. With the dollar, Brazil becomes more attractive to foreigners at the end of the year.
A party in Carneiros for North Americans, for example, would cost around US$750. The average monthly income in the United States is US$4,660, according to July data from the Department of Labor Statistics. It is a much more affordable proportion than that of the Northeast.
