Government and Independent Doctors Union reach agreement

This agreement, which will be extended until 2027, provides for an average salary increase of around 10%. But the increase is not the same for everyone and the percentages will vary according to the categories.

The Government and the Independent Doctors’ Union reached an agreement this Monday after a seven-hour meeting.

This agreement, which will be phased in until 2027, provides for a salary increase averaging around 10%. This means that doctors will rise, on average, six pay positions compared to last year.

But the increase is not the same for everyone and the percentages will vary according to the categories.

“There are doctors who will reach up to 10 additional paid positions”, explains Nuno Rodrigues, secretary general of SIM.

A performance evaluation will become annual and there will still be a progressive reduction of normal emergency working time – which can currently last up to 18 hours and will, by 2028, be up to 12 hours.

The agreement also provides for the “end of discrimination” between individual employment contracts and public service contracts, particularly in the absence and vacation regime, which will now be harmonized.

It also translates into improvements for INEM doctorswho will have similar conditions to colleagues who work in emergency services.

The general secretary of the Independent Doctors’ Union welcomes the agreement, stressing that this aims to strengthen the SNS and guarantee better working conditions for professionals.

“It has concrete improvements and a perspective of the future and continuous appreciation”, says Nuno Rodrigues.
