New Year’s Eve on Kiribati Island |— News18 Tamil Nadu (@News18TamilNadu)
The hands of the clocks struck 00:00 and the calendar read 01/01/2025, leaving behind the undeniably tumultuous year of 2024.
Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island country that includes 33 islands and belongs to Oceania. The capital is the atoll of Tarawa on which the city of Bairiki is located. The name Kiribati is the local pronunciation of “Gilberts”, derived from the main island group in the country, the Gilbert Islands, as well as the former colonial name, Gilbert and Ellis Islands.
Based on the 1995 redrawing of the International Date Line, Kiribati is the easternmost country in the world and was the first state to welcome the year 2000 and the new millennium. Carolina Island, not coincidentally, was renamed Millennium Island.
Kiribati first, USA last
It is noted that Kiribati is the first country to officially welcome 2025, while the USA is the last country to officially welcome the new year.
It is noted that the islands of Kiribati and ten other – mostly uninhabited atolls – as part of it, enter the new year a day before many other states.
