The revocation took place after an agreement between the Executive and the Legislative to approve the spending package; the insurance was terminated in 2020
The president (PT) sanctioned this Tuesday (Dec 31, 2024) the law that overturns the resumption of mandatory insurance to protect victims of traffic accidents, known as Dpvat. Therefore, the insurance will not be charged in 2025. Here is (PDF – 109 kB).
The program was extinguished in 2020 during the (PL) government. His return was in April and the following month. However, Planalto aims to approve the spending cut package in the Legislature.
The return of the Dpvat next year was an attempt by the government to increase federal revenue, but it was unsuccessful. Governors signaled throughout 2024 that they would not implement the charge.
Before being extinguished by the Bolsonaro government, the revenue was intended to cover the impacts of traffic accidents on the SUS (Unified Health System), Social Security and other public systems. In the last year of collection, the insurance collected R$4.6 billion. The amount charged to drivers ranged from R$16.21 to R$84.58. The resources were also used to finance traffic education campaigns.
