New Year’s Eve at Copacabana Beach, in Rio de Janeiro, will feature measures to combat violence against women and support potential victims.
Distributed along the seafront, chemical toilets received stickers with useful telephone numbers for emergency assistance, such as 190, for the Military Police, 180, for the Federal Government’s Women’s Assistance Center, and 197, for the Women’s Assistance Police Station. .
The action is for New Year’s Eve, which will feature 13 stages spread across the waterfront and will host musical attractions for free performances, in addition to the traditional fireworks display. The party is expected to attract 2 million people to Copacabana, according to the city council.
The initiative to make and paste the stickers comes from Sesc RJ, one of the party’s sponsors, and aims to allow victims to receive quick help, alert and prevent this type of violence. “This action does not only serve as support for the victims and witnesses of these crimes”, said the president of Sesc RJ, Antonio Florencio de Queiroz. “It has a preventive nature, in that it provides information to the population and discourages possible aggressors”, he added.
The emergency number stickers also display a QR Code that can be read by smartphone cameras and directs the reader to a website that explains the types of violence against women, be it sexual, physical, moral, psychological and patrimonial. It also indicates the regular addresses of service centers spread throughout the city of Rio de Janeiro.
To accommodate any victims and witnesses, a City Hall Women’s Service Center will also operate on Avenida Atlântica, number 1,976, close to the beach, inside the Escola Municipal Doutor Cícero Penna.
